A History of the Distillery
The Macallan was granted its official licence in 1824, making it one of the earliest legally recognised distilleries in Scotland. It was founded by Alexander Reid, a farmer and schoolmaster, on the Easter Elchies estate in the heart of Speyside. The estate has been at the centre of the distillery's identity ever since. Successive owners have maintained an unusually strict approach to the sourcing and management of casks, a discipline that continues to define the whisky today.
Traditional Production Methods
The Double Cask expression is matured in a combination of American oak seasoned with sherry and European oak seasoned with sherry, the two components married after twelve years. The Macallan commissions many of its own casks from selected forests in Spain and North America, air-drying the staves and having them seasoned with sherry in the traditional bodegas of Jerez before they ever hold a drop of spirit.

Easter Elchies House, a Category B listed manor dating to 1700, remains central to the distillery's identity. The Macallan operates some of the smallest pot stills in Speyside, which increases the ratio of contact between the spirit and the copper surface of the still and is credited with contributing significantly to its characteristic richness.
International Recognition
The distillery's expressions have been decorated repeatedly at international competitions and old bottlings of The Macallan hold several records for prices achieved at auction for a bottle of Scotch whisky.
